Are you thinking about adding a DC-to-DC charger on your vehicle, such as the DJI 1kW Super Fast Car Charger, EcoFlow 800W Alternator Charger, or Bluetti Charger1, but you're concerned about the impact on your OEM alternator? How do the popular "super chargers" for portable power stations from DJI, EcoFlow, and Bluetti impact your alternator? More importantly, will these DC-DC chargers destroy your vehicle's alternator or shorten the life of them?

This is a question I've had for quite some time and I've heard arguments from both sides of the aisle, yet I couldn't find numbers to back-up either side. So I sought to find these numbers by using an OBD2 code reader that shows me the Generator F-Terminal (alternator output) as a percent while driving my truck around to see the impact of a DC to DC charger before and after. My 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD has a 170 amp alternator from the factory (gas 6.6L V8 L8T engine). The results I recorded before and after somewhat surprised me.
